Common BMW Engine Issues
These are the most frequent reasons BMW owners need a replacement engine.
N63 4.4L Twin-Turbo V8 — Oil Leaks, Coolant Lines & Turbo Failure: The N63 earned the nickname “hot-vee” because its twin turbos sit inside the engine valley where exhaust heat degrades every surrounding gasket and seal. Oil leaks from valve covers, oil pan, turbo oil lines, and rear main seal are nearly universal by 80K miles. Turbo coolant feed lines crack from heat cycling. The N63TU (2014+) improved sealing but didn't eliminate the fundamental heat issue. When multiple leaks compound, a replacement engine at 50K–60K miles is often thousands less than itemized repairs.
N20 2.0L Turbo (2012–2016) — Timing Chain Guide Failure: The N20's plastic timing chain guide and tensioner fail between 60K–120K miles, causing a rattling noise on startup that progresses to timing chain jump and catastrophic valve-to-piston contact. Because the timing chain is at the rear of the engine (firewall side), repair requires engine removal — at that labor cost, a replacement engine is the more practical solution.
N55 3.0L Turbo Six — Valve Cover & Oil Filter Housing Gasket: The N55 develops chronic oil leaks from the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket (OFHG). The OFHG leak drips oil directly onto the serpentine belt and can cause sudden loss of all belt-driven accessories. While these are repairable, they tend to compound with wastegate rattle and charge pipe failures on higher-mileage units, making replacement attractive.
B58 3.0L Turbo Six — Excellent Reliability: The B58 (2017+) has proven to be one of BMW's most reliable modern engines, with no widespread failure patterns emerging even at higher mileages. Most B58 replacements we sell are collision-related. This is the engine to buy if you're looking at long-term ownership.

BMW Engine — Quick Answers
Are BMW engines reliable?
It depends entirely on the platform. The B58 inline-six and B48 four-cylinder (2017+) are proving very reliable. The N55 six was solid with regular maintenance. The N63 V8 and N20 four-cylinder have well-documented issues. We can advise on which platform your vehicle uses and what to expect from a replacement.
Why are BMW engines so expensive?
BMW engines use advanced technologies — twin-scroll turbocharging, Valvetronic variable valve lift, Double-VANOS, direct injection, and lightweight aluminum construction. The engineering is genuinely sophisticated. Our used OEM units deliver that same engineering at a fraction of dealer replacement cost.
Do BMW engines come with the turbo?
Yes — all turbocharged BMW engines ship with their complete turbo assembly. The B58 and N55 include the twin-scroll turbo, the N63 includes both turbos, and the S58 M engine includes both turbos with the cross-pipe.
Can I put a B58 engine in my N55 BMW?
We provide the exact OEM engine match for your vehicle VIN. Engine swaps between platforms require extensive ECU, wiring, and cooling system modifications that go far beyond a standard replacement. We match the correct engine code to your specific year and model.
