Engine Fitment Guide

Engines have multiple variants even within the same year/make/model — different displacements, engine families, fuel systems, forced induction configurations, and emissions equipment. This checklist helps you gather what we need to match the exact unit for your vehicle.

1) Get the basics

  • Year / Make / Model
  • Engine configuration (if known): V6, V8, inline-4 (I4), inline-6, etc. — the same model year can use entirely different block architecture depending on trim
  • Engine displacement: a 2.5L and a 3.5L in the same model may have entirely different block and head configurations — they are not interchangeable
  • ZIP code for freight shipping options

2) VIN is best (strongly recommended)

Your VIN lets us verify the exact factory configuration — displacement, engine family, fuel system type, emissions calibration, and build codes. This prevents mismatches, especially on vehicles where the engine varies by trim or option package. You can usually find your VIN:

  • On the driver-side dashboard near the windshield
  • On the driver door jamb sticker
  • On your registration/insurance documents

3) Helpful details (if you have them)

  • Engine size / trim: a 2.5L and a 3.5L in the same model year use entirely different engines — different block architecture, cylinder heads, and sensor configurations that are not interchangeable.
  • Drivetrain: FWD vs AWD vs 4WD — affects the engine output configuration and may change which unit fits.
  • Engine ID tag / build code: often a metal tag or sticker on the engine case itself. If you or your mechanic can read it, it speeds up verification significantly.
  • Forced induction: turbocharged, supercharged, and naturally aspirated engines are not interchangeable even at the same displacement — if you know which your vehicle has, it speeds up the match significantly.
  • Symptoms: burning oil, overheating, knocking or rod knock, loss of compression, misfires, blue or white exhaust smoke, oil in coolant, check engine codes (helps us ask the right questions).

4) Want photos of the exact unit?

When available, we can request photos and ID details from the supplier before purchase. Add “photos requested” in your notes when you submit the quote form.

5) Shipping tips

  • Engines are drained of all fluids, palletized, and shipped via insured freight carrier.
  • Repair shop / commercial delivery is usually the fastest and simplest option for freight.
  • If shipping to a residence, ask about liftgate or terminal pickup options.
  • Inspect freight at delivery and document any visible damage on the carrier paperwork immediately.

6) Not sure which engine your vehicle has?

Many models were offered with two or more engine options in the same model year — a base inline-4 and a V6, a standard V8 and a high-output variant, or a turbocharged and a naturally aspirated option. If you’re not sure which engine is in your vehicle, don’t worry — we can determine the exact engine family and displacement from your VIN and confirm the right match before quoting.
