5.4L 3-Valve Triton — Cam Phaser Failure: The 2004–2010 F-150 and 2005–2014 Expedition/Navigator 5.4L 3V is one of the most common replacement engines we sell. The variable cam timing phasers wear out, creating a loud knocking or rattling on cold start that progressively worsens until the timing jumps. Replacing the phasers requires pulling the engine — at that labor cost, a low-mile used engine with good phasers is often the smarter investment.

3.5L EcoBoost — Timing Chain Stretch: The 2010–2017 3.5L EcoBoost in F-150s and Explorers can develop timing chain stretch at higher mileages, causing rough running and check engine lights. The turbo oil feed lines can also carbon up. A replacement engine with 50K–60K miles has years of reliable service left in it.
