Engines for every major make

GMC trucks and SUVs share their powertrain platforms with Chevrolet, which means our extensive Chevy engine inventory directly serves GMC owners. The 5.3L Vortec/EcoTec3 V8 powers the Sierra 1500 and Yukon with the same AFM/DFM system (and the same failure modes) as the Silverado and Tahoe. The 6.2L V8 serves the Sierra Denali, Yukon Denali, and AT4 trims. For the Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD, the 6.6L Duramax diesel and the 6.6L gasoline L8T V8 are both in stock.

On the mid-size and crossover side, we carry the 3.6L V6 for the Canyon, Acadia, and Terrain, the 2.0L and 1.5L turbo four-cylinders for the Terrain, and the 2.7L turbo four-cylinder for the Sierra 1500. The 4.3L V6 (EcoTec3 LV3) from the Sierra 1500 base model is also available.

Every GMC engine is an OEM original — identical to what GM installed at the factory. Same part numbers, same specifications, same bolt-in fitment as the Chevrolet equivalent.

Common GMC Engine Issues

These are the most frequent reasons GMC owners need a replacement engine.

5.3L V8 — AFM Lifter Failure: Identical to the Chevrolet Silverado/Tahoe issue. The 5.3L in the 2007–2022 Sierra 1500 and Yukon suffers from AFM lifter collapse — the most common engine failure across all GM trucks. Roller bearing fragments from failed lifters circulate through the oil system, causing cascading damage. A replacement engine with healthy lifters eliminates the problem completely — this is our most requested GMC engine by a wide margin.

2.4L EcoTec — Timing Chain & Piston Rings: The 2010–2017 Terrain 2.4L shares the exact same timing chain stretch and piston ring oil consumption problems as the Equinox application. Replacement is typically required between 80K–130K miles.

6.6L Duramax — Injector & DEF System: The newer L5P Duramax (2017+) is significantly more reliable than earlier generations, but the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) system components can cause operational issues that lead owners to seek engine swaps. The older LML (2011–2016) can develop CP4 fuel pump failures that send metal debris throughout the injection system, often requiring a complete engine replacement.

GMC Engine — Quick Answers

Are GMC and Chevy engines the same?

Yes — GMC trucks and SUVs use identical engines to their Chevrolet counterparts. A 5.3L from a Sierra is the same engine as a 5.3L from a Silverado, with the same part numbers and specifications. When you request a GMC engine, we source from the full GM inventory pool, which gives you the widest selection available.

Do you carry Duramax diesel engines for GMC trucks?

We stock Duramax engines across all generations for the Sierra HD trucks. Due to the high cost and demand for diesel units, especially the L5P and LBZ, we recommend getting a quote as early as possible to secure availability.

Why is the 5.3L AFM lifter issue so common in GMC trucks?

The Active Fuel Management system deactivates four of eight cylinders under light load to save fuel. The constant activation and deactivation cycle wears the lifter internals faster than a conventional lifter, leading to collapse and internal fragmentation. It affects virtually every GM 5.3L and 6.2L produced from 2007 onward.

Can I get an AFM delete done on the replacement engine?

We ship the engine as-built from the factory, which includes AFM components. Your installer can add an AFM/DFM delete kit during installation — this is a common and recommended modification that prevents the lifter failure pattern from recurring on the new engine.
