The 2011–2019 Theta II engine (both the 2.4L GDI and 2.0T) has a manufacturing defect where metal debris from the machining process was not fully cleaned from the crankshaft oil passages. Over time, this debris scores the connecting rod bearings, leading to knock, seizure, and catastrophic engine failure — often with no warning other than a brief knock before the engine locks up.
