Engines for every major make

Hyundai's rapid growth in the American market has made their engines one of our fastest-growing inventory categories. The Theta II engine family — particularly the 2.4L GDI and 2.0T — powers the vast majority of Hyundai vehicles on the road: Sonata, Santa Fe, Tucson, and the Kia siblings (Optima/K5, Sportage, Sorento). The Theta II is also our most frequently replaced Hyundai engine due to a well-documented manufacturing defect (detailed below).

Beyond the Theta II, we carry the 1.6L Gamma turbo from the Tucson, Veloster, and Elantra Sport, the 2.5L Smartstream from the current Sonata and Santa Fe, the 3.3L and 3.8L Lambda V6 from the Genesis, Azera, Santa Fe, and Palisade, and the 3.5L V6 from the newest Palisade and Genesis models. For the Accent and older Elantra, we stock the 1.6L and 1.8L Nu-series engines.

Every Hyundai engine is an OEM original with verified mileage and our standard warranty included.

Common Hyundai Engine Issues

These are the most frequent reasons Hyundai owners need a replacement engine.

Theta II 2.4L GDI & 2.0T — Connecting Rod Bearing Seizure: This is the big one. The 2011–2019 Theta II engine (both the 2.4L GDI and 2.0T) has a manufacturing defect where metal debris from the machining process was not fully cleaned from the crankshaft oil passages. Over time, this debris scores the connecting rod bearings, leading to knock, seizure, and catastrophic engine failure — often with no warning other than a brief knock before the engine locks up. Hyundai/Kia issued a recall and extended warranty, but the replacement engines provided under the recall have also been reported to fail. This is, by volume, one of the top 5 replacement engines we sell across all makes.

1.6L Gamma Turbo — Premature Turbo Failure & Oil Starvation: The 1.6T in the Tucson and Veloster can develop turbo bearing failure from restricted oil feed, which then sends metal debris into the engine. When the turbo takes the engine with it, replacement of the complete assembly is required.

3.3L/3.8L Lambda V6 — Generally Reliable, but GDI Carbon Buildup: The Lambda V6 is a significantly more robust platform than the Theta II, but like all direct-injection engines, it develops intake valve carbon buildup over time that causes misfires and rough idle. Walnut blasting can resolve this on a healthy engine, but if the carbon has caused valve damage, replacement is the cleaner path.

Hyundai Theta II engine replacements are among our highest-demand items — inventory moves quickly. Get your quote now.

Hyundai Engine — Quick Answers

Is my Hyundai covered under the Theta II engine recall?

Hyundai issued recalls and extended warranties covering certain 2011-2019 Sonata, Santa Fe, and Tucson models with the 2.4L and 2.0T Theta II engine. Coverage varies by VIN, model year, and current mileage. We recommend checking with your dealer first — if your vehicle is out of recall coverage or the wait time is unacceptable, we can provide a quality replacement engine quickly.

Will a replacement Theta II engine have the same bearing defect?

Our replacement units are sourced in the 45K-65K mile range from donor vehicles with no bearing noise or failure symptoms. We inspect specifically for the Theta II connecting rod bearing issue before adding any unit to inventory. Additionally, engines from later production runs incorporated improved machining processes that reduced the defect rate.

Do Hyundai and Kia use the same engines?

Yes — Hyundai and Kia share engine platforms across their lineups. The Theta II 2.4L in a Sonata is the same engine as in an Optima/K5. The Smartstream 2.5L in a Santa Fe is the same as in a Sorento. When you request a Hyundai engine, we source from the combined Hyundai/Kia inventory pool for maximum availability.

How fast can I get a Hyundai replacement engine?

Most Hyundai engines, especially the high-demand Theta II 2.4L and 2.0T, ship within 1-3 business days. Due to the volume of Theta II replacements we handle, we maintain deeper stock on these units than almost any other engine platform.
