Engines for every major make

MINI uses BMW engine platforms across its lineup. Current models use the B38 1.5L turbo three-cylinder (134 hp) in the base Cooper, the B46/B48 2.0L turbo four-cylinder (189–228 hp) in the Cooper S, and the B48 tuned variant (301 hp) in the John Cooper Works. Older models used the Prince/EP6 1.6L turbo (shared with Peugeot) in the 2007–2015 Cooper S and JCW, and the naturally aspirated 1.6L in the base Cooper.

The Countryman and Clubman use the same B-series engine family. We also carry the supercharged 1.6L for the 2002–2006 R53 Cooper S. We source from the combined BMW/MINI inventory for maximum availability.

Common MINI Engine Issues

These are the most frequent reasons MINI owners need a replacement engine.

Prince/EP6 1.6L Turbo (2007–2015 Cooper S/JCW) — Timing Chain Stretch & Carbon Buildup: The Peugeot-sourced EP6 turbo engine is MINI's most problematic platform. The timing chain stretches rapidly (sometimes as early as 50K miles), causing a rattle on startup and eventually jumped timing. The direct injection system also causes severe intake valve carbon buildup. Combined with oil leak points at the valve cover, oil filter housing, and turbo oil return line, the EP6 is our most commonly replaced MINI engine.

N14 1.6L Turbo (2007–2010 Cooper S) — Worse Than N18: The N14 version of the EP6 is the worst variant, with more frequent timing chain and turbo wastegate failures. The N18 (2011–2015) improved durability but didn't fully resolve the timing chain issue. For both N14 and N18 engines with chain rattle or turbo wastegate noise, a replacement engine eliminates the diagnostic uncertainty of trying to isolate which components have failed.

B48 2.0L Turbo (2019+ Cooper S) — Reliable BMW Platform: The BMW B48 engine in current MINI models is a significant reliability improvement over the EP6. No widespread failure patterns have emerged. Most replacements are collision-related.

MINI Cooper S turbo engines are our fastest-moving European four-cylinder — EP6 and B48 units go fast. Quote now before stock changes.

MINI Engine — Quick Answers

Are MINI and BMW engines the same?

Current MINI models use BMW B-series engines (B38, B46, B48) — the same platforms found in BMW 1/2/3 Series and X1/X2. The 2007-2015 Cooper S used a Peugeot-sourced engine that is NOT a BMW platform. We source from the BMW/MINI combined inventory.

Is the MINI Cooper S engine reliable?

It depends entirely on the generation. The 2007-2015 Prince/EP6 turbo engine has well-known timing chain issues. The 2019+ BMW B48 turbo is significantly more reliable. We can advise on which platform your MINI uses.

How much does it cost to replace a MINI engine?

Our used OEM MINI engines are priced dramatically below dealer replacement — often 50-70% less. The EP6 timing chain repair alone costs $3,000-$5,000 at a shop, and that does not address oil leaks or carbon buildup. A complete replacement engine with 50K-60K miles eliminates every issue at once and resets the maintenance clock.

Does the MINI engine come with the turbo?

Yes — all turbocharged MINI engines (EP6 turbo, B48 turbo, B38 turbo) ship with the turbocharger assembly included. The supercharged R53 Cooper S includes the Eaton supercharger. These are complete long-block assemblies ready for direct installation.
