Common Porsche Engine Issues
These are the most frequent reasons Porsche owners need a replacement engine.
M96/M97 Flat-Six (997/Boxster 987/Cayman 987) — IMS Bearing Failure: The intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing in the 1999–2008 M96 and M97 flat-six engines can fail catastrophically, sending metal debris through the engine. Early single-row bearing designs (1999–2005) have the highest failure rate. The IMS bearing retrofit is a preventive fix, but once the bearing has failed, engine replacement is required. This is our most requested Porsche engine.
9A1 3.8L (997.2/991.1) — Cylinder Bore Scoring: Some 2009–2013 997.2 and 2012–2016 991.1 Carrera S engines developed cylinder bore scoring where the Nikasil cylinder lining develops vertical scoring marks, causing oil consumption and eventual compression loss. This is a debated issue with no official recall — affected engines need replacement.
Cayenne 4.5L/4.8L V8 (955/957) — Coolant Pipe & Timing Chain: The first- and second-gen Cayenne V8 develops coolant pipe failures and timing chain wear at higher mileages. Both are major repair operations that often justify replacement on 100K+ mile engines.

Porsche Engine — Quick Answers
What is the Porsche IMS bearing issue?
The intermediate shaft bearing in 1999-2008 flat-six engines can fail catastrophically. The single-row bearing (1999-2005) has the highest failure rate. Our replacement engines are inspected for IMS bearing condition, and we can advise on which production years carry the most risk.
Do you carry Porsche 911 GT3 engines?
We stock the naturally aspirated flat-six for the GT3 when available. Due to extremely limited donor vehicles and strong demand, GT3 engines are ultra-specialty units — quote immediately for availability.
Are Porsche Cayenne engines the same as Audi?
The current Cayenne shares the 2.9L V6 and 4.0L V8 with the Audi RS models. The Macan 2.0T shares the EA888 platform with the A4/Q5. Combined VW Group inventory for these shared platforms.
